Asbestos Testing

Asbestos Testing

Chemsafety has its own in-house IANZ Accredited laboratory.  This allows us to ensure the quality of our analysis is as high as the consultancy services we provide.  With fully trained analysts for both bulk asbestos analysis and fibre identification we can analyse materials that may contain asbestos.

Doing renovations to your home?

If you are thinking of doing some renovations on your property, you need to check for the presence of asbestos before starting the work, especially for properties built, or had some work done, between 1950 and 2000, as they are quite likely to contain some asbestos.

How do I know if building material contains asbestos?

The best and safest way to know if a material contains or not asbestos is to hire an occupational hygienist with asbestos experience, an asbestos surveyor, or a licensed asbestos assessor, to come to your property, assess what materials could contain asbestos, collect the samples, send them to an IANZ accredited laboratory for analysis and generate an asbestos register report that is easy for you to understand.

The advantages of hiring a professional is that they are trained on how to safely handle asbestos material, have the skills and the knowledge of where to find and when to assume the presence of asbestos, can advise you on the requirements of NZ legislation and at the end of the process can produce a reliable and independent report. By using a professional you are also not putting your own health and safety and risk during sample collection.

Where can Asbestos be Found?

Asbestos is most likely to be found in buildings that were constructed before the mid-1980s.  It can be found in the following locations;

  • Textured ceilings
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Cement cladding & roofing
  • Plaster and plaster cornice
  • Lagging for insulation around pipes, heater & hot water cylinders
  • Backing material for floor tiles & vinyl sheets

The only way to be certain if building material contains asbestos is to have a sample analysed.  If you are completing renovations to your home and are disturbing any of the above areas it is recommended sampling is completed before work starts.
