Certified Handler Training

Under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) regulations everyone who stores, handles, uses or manufacturers hazardous substances is required to have training.

The most hazardous substances, including toxic classes 6.1A & 6.1B (acute toxicity category 1 & 2) require a Certified Handler.

Certified Handlers are in place to ensure that these very hazardous substances are under the control of experienced people, who understand the risks and controls for them. There are two key components – knowledge of the substance and rules, and secondly practical experience with managing the substance.

We offer a full day course (9am-4.30pm) which covers the theory requirements for becoming a Certified Handler. Following this, a practical assessment is required to put the theory in place. This assessment is carried out at your site by one of our Compliance Certifiers and can also be done by interactive video conference call via Microsoft Teams.

Chemsafety can only certify handlers for acutely toxic Class 6.1A & 6.1B hazardous substances in line with HSW(HS) Reg 4.3. We are unable to certify handlers for the use of agrichemicals, veterinary medicines, and vertebrate toxic agents, but can certify persons storing or manufacturing these products.
