Did you know that removing your hearing protection for just 15 minutes in a high noise area (100dbA – 104dBA) and you will have met your maximum allowed noise for the day, prior to permanent hearing damage?
In New Zealand most companies tend to provide Class 5 hearing protection for all employees because ‘’it’s the best’’. Form our experience this is likely to cause over protection for a significant number of work sites across the country. The problem with over protection is employees then start using the hearing protection incorrectly, such as slipping one ear out so they can talk to colleague’s. Very quickly a minute chat every half an hour leads to 16 minutes over a day and by then you may have already exceeded your maximum allowable daily noise dose and be at risk for hearing loss.
This is why selecting the correct hearing protection is important as well as training staff on the risks of noise and on correct use and care of hearing protection. Chemsafety can help by undertaking a noise survey of your site, this will help determine what the best control measures are for your workplace noise hazards.
